Memorial Service for 5228 Philip Antonsen

The memorial service will be held at the Royal Military College of Canada in Currie Hall (Currie Building) on Thursday, 8 September 2016 at 14:00 (2PM). A reception will follow in the Senior Staff Mess. The service will be conducted by Rev Dr Barbara Sykes (wife of 5297 Ralph Sykes). If you are planning to attend, please contact 5207 Andrew Robb ( ) for advice on parking. Dress does not include the wearing of medals.

As many of you know, Phil suffered a stroke in early February and received treatment at hospitals in Florida and Kingston, ON. Phil had severe paralysis in his left arm and leg but his mind and speech were unaffected. He was home with Wendy from 18 May until 19 June when he suffered a seizure. While in hospital in late June the medical staff discovered cancer in his lungs and brain. He returned home and had some radiation treatments during July. On 25 July he began to feel unwell and was taken to Kingston General Hospital again where he was diagnosed with pneumonia. He passed away on 28 July with his family at his side.

Phil had been a key member of our class (1961) for many years. He was class secretary and in this role kept track of our whereabouts. He tracked down many whom he called ‘lost souls’ and reconnected them to our class. He and Wendy hosted a number of summer BBQ gatherings at their home on Howes Lake near Verona. Phil was the lead organiser of many or our reunions, especially in the years after Gord Hawkins passed away.

Wendy has suggested that anyone wishing to make a memorial donation could do so by contributing to the RMC Class of 1961 Heritage Preservation Fund of the RMC Foundation. Our class through this fund has supported a few endeavours of the RMC Foundation and most recently has funded the decorative painting in the foyer, stairs and Baronial Hall of Currie Building. Phil was passionately in support of this project.
